Incense is way older than the hippies burning it in the Haight during the 60ʼs! Its use goes all the way back to religious ceremonies in early Egyptian and Indian civilizations and its manufacture was nothing less than a sacred art. The Hindus have long used it for all temple offerings while the Buddhists have burned it at festivals, initiations and daily rites. The Chinese have used incense to honor ancestors and the Japanese actually turned it into an act of beauty and a fine art revered by many called Koh. According to them, Koh has ten virtues dating back to the 16th century...a few of which are removing impurity, bringing alertness, peace and communication with the departed.
